Tourists note and journalist write that Margaret River has one of the largest cave systems in the country’s south western region. Research shows that more than 350 caves lie concealed beneath the surface of Margaret River. Water has been trickling through the limestone crest which reaches out some 80 kilometers along the coastline for so many years. Many caves are not accessible to the public for safety reasons. Nonetheless, there are caverns ready to be discovered alongside Caves Road.
The Jewel Cave is considered the most impressive of all the prominent tourist caves in Margaret River. It showcases the longest formation of straw stalactites in the whole world. On the other hand, Mammoth Cave is a self guiding cave that you can visit anytime without a professional guide. You can find beguiling formations and fossils of extinct animals like the Tasmanian tiger. The Lake Cave has a peaceful lagoon which replicates formations suspended from the cave ceiling. Incidentally, you need an experienced tour guide for this journey. However, there are limited tours so it is necessary to make advanced bookings with tour agents. You can also opt for unexplored caves in Margaret River for more adventure but make sure that you are well equipped for such expeditions.
